The 'APPEA Five' plead not guilty

Updated: Apr 21, 2023

Five ACT climate activists pleaded not guilty to charges of unreasonable obstruction at the ACT Magistrates Court yesterday. The charges were laid after the five - and many others - blockaded the entrances to the offices of the nation's biggest fossil fuel lobby group, APPEA, in Civic, ACT.

The five include a climate scientist, a retired psychologist, a graphic artist, a former consultant and a former public servant, from a coalition of ACT-based climate groups including Extinction Rebellion, Move Beyond Coal, Stop Fossil Fuel Subsidies and the Peoples Climate Assembly.

Around thirty people gathered to show their support for the APPEA Five. Please join us when they return for their court hearings - watch for updates.

Extinction Rebellion ACT acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land on which Canberra is situated, the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people. We wish to recognise and respect their continuing connection to the land and water, and the contribution they make to the life of this city and this region. Their sovereignty was never ceded. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. We would also like to acknowledge other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who may visit this area.
